Here is the quiet thing nobody tells you about being a reader: you forget. You finish The Housemaid at one in the morning, swear you will remember every twist, and a season later all you can recall is that you stayed up too late. This excel book tracker is a single workbook that holds the year you actually read, and a reading log spreadsheet built for readers who refuse to let their library blur into a fog.

It is January. You open the workbook, land on the Books tab, and type in the first title of the year. The tab holds up to 500 books, and each row asks for the cover, author, language, genre, sub-genre, year, page count, and reading status. You rate the book across five lanes — Overall, Story, Characters, Originality, and Style — while it is still loud in your head. By the time you flip to a new excel book tracker entry for Funny Story, you have a row that will still mean something in October.

February arrives with The Fox Wife and a passage you cannot stop rereading. You move to the Quotes tab and paste the line in. Each quote ties back to a book on the Books tab through the cover thumbnail, and you give the line its own quote rating out of ten. The dog-eared page is no longer the only place that sentence lives.

Spring is when you start wondering if your taste matches the crowd. The Critic Ratings tab is the answer, and you log scores from Goodreads, Barnes & Noble, and Google in their own rows. Each entry stores the rating, the max rating, and a direct Site URL to the original review, so a side-by-side with your own five-category score takes a single scroll instead of three browser tabs.

By summer the reading tracker spreadsheet has become a habit. You sit down with First Lie Wins, set a phone timer, and log the session on the Journal tab — date, book, source (your personal collection), minutes, and a note for whatever you want to remember about that hour. The Progress Over the Past Week line chart redraws as you type, and the Weekly Goal and Monthly Goal counters tell you, plainly, whether your pace is holding.

December is when it pays off. You open the Dashboard and the year is laid out for you: Total Books Tracked, Total Books Read, Total Pages Read, Total # of Critic Ratings, Total Items in Collection, Total Collection Value, Books Currently Reading, and a Series Status column chart showing what is completed, on hold, or still considering. A My Top Rated Books bar chart sits next to a Critic Top Rated Books bar chart, and a pie chart breaks down how much of your shelf actually has critic coverage. The difference between this and a reading app is that nothing here is borrowed. The file is yours, the data is yours, the seven tabs work without an account, a subscription, or an internet connection.

It is January again. You open the workbook, scroll past The Berry Pickers and The Teacher in last year’s Books tab, and start a fresh row — because the page you closed at one in the morning is finally a page you can find again.
