Compa-Ratio Calculator

A salary on its own tells you very little — the same number is generous for one role and low for another. This free calculator fixes that: enter one pay band (or salary band) — its minimum, midpoint, and maximum — and a salary, and it returns the compa-ratio (pay against the midpoint), the range penetration (where in the band it sits), and the band placement. Use it right here in your browser, or download the spreadsheet to keep.

Range penetration43%
PlacementLower-mid (Q2)

Below the midpoint, in the lower-middle of the band.

Compa-ratio is salary ÷ band midpoint (1.00 sits at the midpoint). Range penetration is where the salary sits from the band floor (0%) to ceiling (100%). As a common guideline many teams treat roughly 0.90–1.10 as the fully-competent zone — adjust to your own pay policy. Pre-filled with an example — replace it with your own band and salary. Runs entirely in your browser; nothing is saved or sent. (Illustrative — a planning tool, not compensation, legal, or HR advice.)

What it does

  • Computes compa-ratio (salary ÷ band midpoint) — 1.00 sits right at the rate the band targets.
  • Computes range penetration — where the salary sits from the band floor (0%) to ceiling (100%).
  • Names the placement — below band, one of four in-band quartiles, or above band — and flags off-band pay.
  • Runs entirely in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing is saved.

Own it, don't rent it

Want your whole team, plus a pay-equity screen?

This free tool checks one role. The full workbook builds your whole band structure, places every employee automatically with compa-ratio, range penetration, and placement, flags below-band and above-band pay, and screens pay equity by gender, department, and tenure — a 7-tab spreadsheet you keep (Excel, Google Sheets, or LibreOffice) plus four guides and a one-click Google Sheets copy.

A one-time purchase you keep and reuse every comp cycle — the owned workbook between a blank spreadsheet and a rented per-seat compensation platform.

A planning tool, not compensation, legal, or HR advice. The example figures are illustrative — not market data. Keep salary data confidential to those who need it. Free to use; please don't resell or redistribute.
