Free Trading Journal & Trade Log

An R-multiple is a trade's net result after fees divided by the risk you planned before you got in. A log that records only profit and loss can't compare trades by the risk each one took. This free trading journal spreadsheet also asks for your planned stop, so it can put every stock and option trade in R. It is one Trade Log tab that opens on 24 invented sample trades, so you can check the math before you clear them (the Read Me tab shows which cells) and type your own.

What it does

  • Works out each trade's net P&L after fees, long or short, from quantity, entry, exit and a multiplier you type: 1 for shares, 100 for a standard option contract.
  • Turns the stop you planned into planned risk in dollars, then divides the net result by it to give the trade's R-multiple, so a $300 win on a tight stop and a $300 win on a loose one stop looking the same.
  • Marks each trade Win, Loss or Open and keeps a running win rate in the last column, from the top of the log down.
  • Sums closed trades, wins, losses, win rate, total fees and total net P&L at the top of the tab.
  • Opens on 24 invented stock and option trades so you can check the math: 23 closed, 16 wins, a 69.6% win rate and $5,001.00 net after fees. Those are illustrative sample figures, not typical results; the tickers are fictional and every price is made up.
  • Opens in Excel and LibreOffice, and in Google Sheets once you import it there, with 100 log rows, no macros, no signup, and nothing saved anywhere but your own copy.

Want to know which setups actually pay?

This log measures one trade at a time. The full workbook tells you what the trades add up to: expectancy, profit factor, payoff ratio and max drawdown on a Dashboard with an equity curve; an Edge Finder that ranks your setups, symbols, weekdays and sides and says Mixed when R and dollars disagree; a Mistake Cost tab that puts a dollar figure on each mistake tag against your clean trades; a Cash Flows tab so deposits and withdrawals never count as gains; a Monthly Review with written prompts; and futures (16 contract point values built in), crypto and USD-quoted forex priced in the same 2,000-row log. One 8-tab file for Excel and Google Sheets, with a 17-page guide and printable trade plan and review sheets.

A one-time purchase you keep in your own drive: no seats, no subscription, nothing that stops working because a plan lapsed.

Not advice: this is an educational record-keeping tool, not investment, trading or tax advice. It does not recommend trades or connect to a broker. The sample tickers and trades are fictitious. Free to use; please don't resell or redistribute.
