Free Driving Conversation Script

It is the conversation families put off the longest, because it is the one where a parent hears “you are finished” no matter how carefully you say it. An opener is the easy half — you can find one anywhere. What nobody gives you is what happens twenty seconds later, when your father says “I'm fine, I've been driving for sixty years” and every sentence you prepared has stopped applying. This free script is one of the 24 in the Caregiver Conversations Scripts & Letters Swipe Bank, lifted unchanged, and it maps the five answers you are most likely to get, what each one means underneath, and the exact words to say next to each. It is a conversation script, not advice: what a doctor may do about someone's driving, and what a licensing agency does with a report, differ by state.

What it does

  • Gives you the opener — the exact words, including the sentence that names what you are not asking for, which is the line most people skip and the one that keeps the conversation open.
  • Maps the five replies you are most likely to get, from “I'm fine, I've been driving for sixty years” to “so how am I supposed to get anywhere?” — with what each one usually means underneath, and the words to say next to each.
  • Names the three lines that reliably end the conversation, and the reason each one does. Most of them are things you have already said.
  • Tells you who should raise it, when and where, and how long to give it — one person, never two; their home in daylight, not in the car and not after dark; twenty minutes, and be willing to stop at five.
  • Carries the before-you-sit-down list — two things you actually saw with the dates, the trips the car is really for, and one replacement you have already priced.
  • Says what a good outcome actually looks like (much smaller than you think) and what to do if it goes badly, including where it stops being a conversation you can have alone.
  • Includes a written version to send afterward, and the same conversation played out in full for an invented family, so you can see the register before you try it.
  • PDF, US Letter — read it on screen or print it. Nothing to sign up for, nothing saved anywhere but your own copy.

Want the other twenty-three conversations?

This is 1 of 24. The full bank covers eight situations end to end — driving, help in the home, money and documents, a move or a change in level of care, siblings, doctors and facilities, work and the wider family, and your own — with 125 replies mapped in all, and every conversation also played out in full. It adds the Start Here playbook (the four moves, twelve rewrites side by side, when to have each conversation and when not to, and the page on where persuasion stops and a professional starts), eight print-and-fill worksheets in US Letter and A4, 24 plain-text files you can rewrite in your own words, and a searchable index — 148 pages across four PDF books.

A one-time purchase you keep and can edit — files that sit on your drive rather than a page you have to find again.

A conversation script and general guidance — not medical, legal, or financial advice, and not a substitute for any of them. Nothing here tells you what a doctor must, may, or will do about someone's driving, or what a licensing agency does with a report; both differ by state and sometimes by county. This script is written for persuasion, not override: an adult who has capacity has the right to make choices their family thinks are unwise, and whether a particular person can make a particular decision is a clinical and legal judgment, not a family one. If what you have seen is serious enough that waiting is not safe, raise it with their doctor rather than handle it alone. Free to use; please don't resell or redistribute.
