The Measurable-Standard Rewriter
A free PDF that turns vague performance feedback into a standard somebody can actually meet, before it goes on a performance improvement plan (PIP). It exists for one sentence — “Needs to improve attention to detail.” Nobody can tell, on any given Tuesday, whether they are meeting that, so the first honest conversation happens at the review, which is far too late for the employee and for you. General management guidance, not legal or HR advice.

What it does
- The five tests a performance standard has to pass before it goes near a plan — behavior not trait, a number or a rate or a deadline, the any-given-day test, inside the employee’s control, and a bar you already hold others to.
- Twelve worked performance-standard rewrites, two from each of the six deficiency categories: quality of work, productivity and output, attendance and timekeeping, communication and collaboration, following process and procedure, and conduct and professionalism.
- One pair in full, so you can see the shape before you download: “Needs to improve attention to detail.” becomes “Submit completed work with no more than 1 factual or formatting error per 10-page document, verified before sending.”
- Every rewrite comes with how it is measured — by a named person, or by the system that already records it — and a suggested timeframe, because a standard with no named measure is still an opinion, however specific it sounds.
- One rewrite walked through all five tests, showing why the vague version fails each one and the measurable version passes — so the method is demonstrated, not asserted.
- A blank six-row grid in the same four columns, laid out to print and fill in with a pen.
- Ships pre-filled: the twelve rewrites and the worked example are finished, worked content you can adapt on the way out, not an empty template.
- One PDF, laid out for US Letter and scaling cleanly to A4. No signup, nothing to log into, and nothing saved anywhere but your own copy of the file.

The standard is the easy half. The record is the rest.
This free PDF is twelve rewrites out of the paid kit’s Standards Library of fifty-four, and that library is one tab of eleven. The Evidence Log keeps the day something happened apart from the day you wrote it down, computes the gap and bands every record Strong, Good, Weak or Reconstructed. The Plan Builder derives all three check-in dates and the review date from a start date and a number of weeks, and withholds “ready to issue” until five checks pass, naming in words the one that failed. Plus eight corrective-action documents, each as a fillable PDF and an editable Word file.
A one-time purchase you keep and reuse for the next plan — the owned performance file between a blank form and an ongoing subscription to somebody else’s HR platform.
General management guidance for writing a standard somebody can meet, not legal advice and not HR advice for your organization. It applies no legal test. What a performance process must contain, how many steps are required, and what makes a dismissal lawful are set by law and by your own employer’s policy, and vary sharply between countries and between states. The figures in the worked rewrites are examples, not recommendations — a standard borrowed whole from somebody else’s business is just a different kind of vague.
