Home Inventory Starter
A home inventory only helps if it exists before you need it, and the job stalls when it starts as one long list. This free home inventory spreadsheet works the way you walk a house: pick a room, list what's in it, and record what each thing would cost to buy new today. It adds up every room and the whole home as you type, and it opens on a worked example from a fictional household so you can see it working before you clear the rows and start your own.

What it does
- Lists your belongings one row per item (or per set, with a quantity) under a room, a category and a condition, with brand, model, serial number, purchase date and purchase price beside each one.
- Multiplies quantity by replacement cost for every row, and shows the number of items (a set of four chairs counts as four) and the total replacement cost at the top of the list.
- Adds up items and replacement cost for each room on a Room Totals tab, with each room's share of the whole home and a grand total. Add a room there and it joins the Room dropdown.
- Records whether you have saved a receipt and taken a photo of each item, so you can see what still needs doing while you're standing in the room.
- Opens pre-filled with a fictional household: 46 example rows across 14 of its 15 preset rooms, so the totals are working the moment you open it. Clear the example rows or type over them.
- Comes with a short guide on how to walk a house room by room, what to record, and where to keep a copy so one event can't take the record with it.
