Score the opportunity, don’t get sold the brochure
Buying a franchise or a business opportunity is a six-figure decision that almost always lands under a one-sided pitch — a glossy brochure, a salesperson’s enthusiasm, and a headline return that drowns out everything else. The Franchise / Business-Opportunity Decision Helper gets the decision out of the brochure and onto one page, so you can score competing opportunities with a clear head instead of being sold.
It’s a weighted decision matrix built as a workbook you own. You set a weight for each thing that matters to you — total investment, ongoing royalties, projected ROI and payback, franchisor support, brand strength, territory, lock-in, and track record — then rate each opportunity from 1 to 5. The workbook returns a single weighted score per opportunity and ranks them, so the strongest overall fit rises to the top instead of the biggest number on the brochure.
Why a weighted score beats a glossy brochure
A brochure leads with one big number and hopes you stop there. A weighted scorecard doesn’t. A fast, credible payback might matter far more to you than a famous brand — so this tool lets you weight it that way, and the math follows. The opportunity with the best projected return and the one that fits you best are often not the same opportunity, and a big ROI figure is very good at hiding that. Scoring the decision makes the trade-offs visible, in numbers you set yourself.
Turn the brochure into real returns
A headline return is a poor way to compare opportunities. The built-in Investment & Returns tab makes you write down the real numbers — total investment, projected annual revenue and profit, and the royalty rate — and folds them into two comparable figures per opportunity: a return on investment and a payback period. That’s a far fairer basis for your rating than the best case on a flyer. A big, famous brand with a high buy-in and a long payback can come out behind a modest concept with a fast return — better to learn that here than a year into a ten-year agreement.
Compare, rank, and vet your opportunities
- Compare up to four opportunities side by side on the criteria you choose and weight.
- Rank them automatically by a weighted score on a clean 1–5 scale.
- Compute the real return with the Investment & Returns tab, so ROI and payback are on equal terms.
- See the price of fit — the Results tab shows the best-fit opportunity next to the highest-return one and names the gap between them.
- Do the due diligence — a built-in checklist walks the FDD, the validation calls, and the attorney and accountant reviews before you sign.
- Decide whether to buy at all — score “keep my money and invest elsewhere” as one of the options.
What’s inside

- Opportunity Facts — every opportunity’s terms (type, fee, royalty, territory, term) side by side.
- Results & Ranking — opportunities ranked by score, with the best-fit/highest-return gap named.
- How to Score — the 1–5 scale, the eight criteria, and how to set your weights.
- Notes & Due Diligence — the checks to run before you sign, with a place to record what you find.
- Read Me — how the tabs fit together, and where to start.
- Three PDF guides — a Start Here guide, a Scoring & Weighting guide with a fully worked example, and a Due-Diligence & Questions checklist with a printable scorecard.
Works in Excel, Google Sheets, and LibreOffice
Use the .xlsx in Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc, or open the included one-click link and choose Make a copy for a ready-made native Google Sheets version in your own Drive — no importing, nothing to set up. It comes pre-loaded with three fictional example opportunities so you can see the method working before you enter your own.
Try it free first
Want to feel the method before you buy? The free Franchise Web Scorer weighs two opportunities across the five core criteria — investment, projected return, support, brand, and lock-in — right in your browser, no sign-up. When you’re weighing more than two opportunities, want your own criteria, or want to keep the file, the workbook is the full version.
Own it, don’t rent it
This sits between a blank spreadsheet (free, but you build everything) and a subscription decision app (overkill and a recurring bill). It’s the structure you keep: a connected, owned workbook for the choices worth getting right — and you can reuse it for the next big decision, too.
Who it’s for
Anyone weighing a franchise or business-opportunity purchase — one opportunity against your alternatives, or several against each other. First-time franchise buyers who want a structured way to compare deals that differ on far more than the headline price. Existing owners comparing a second unit or a different concept. Anyone who tends to over-index on the projected return and wants to see, in their own numbers, what the highest-return option would cost them in support, brand, or lock-in.
A decision-making and planning template — not financial, legal, tax, investment, or franchise advice. A weighted score is a tool for thinking, not a verdict you have to obey: it’s there to inform your decision and slow down a sold one, never to make the call for you. The three example opportunities and all their numbers are fictional and do not describe any real franchise. A franchise is a major purchase — read the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD), call existing franchisees, and consult a franchise attorney and an accountant before you sign. The decision, and the responsibility for it, stay yours.
