How Often to Water Common Houseplants

"How often should I water my houseplants" doesn't have one answer — it has a method. Here's how to work out your own number for each plant you own, a table of starting points to correct from, and why the right interval in July is wrong in January.

There’s a reason “how often should I water my monstera” is one of the first questions a new plant owner asks, and it isn’t that nobody has ever written an answer. It’s that the honest answer isn’t a number — it’s a method for finding your own number, because the same plant needs completely different amounts of water depending on your light, your pot, and the season.

The short version, before the method: in summer, aroids like pothos and monstera generally want water about once a week, ferns and calatheas every three to seven days, and snake plants, ZZ plants and most succulents somewhere between ten days and about three weeks. In winter every one of those stretches, typically by half again or more. They’re bands to test, not answers. The rest of this page is how you turn one of them into the right number for the plant on your shelf.

Why watering on a fixed schedule goes wrong

Set yourself a rule — “water every Sunday” — and you have made a mistake that is easy to miss, because it looks like diligence. Plants don’t drink on a calendar. They drink based on how fast their roots are using water and how fast the potting mix is drying out, and both of those change constantly with light, temperature, and the season. Water every Sunday regardless, and sooner or later you’re pouring water onto mix that’s still wet from last week. Mix that never dries holds very little air, and roots left in it are stressed and easy for rot organisms to take hold in.

Overwatering is also the harder mistake to come back from. A thirsty plant that goes a few extra days without water usually recovers within a day of a good soak. A plant with rotting roots often doesn’t show it above the soil until the leaves are yellowing and the roots are already gone. The fix isn’t a stricter schedule — it’s checking the plant instead of the calendar.

The three tests that beat any table

Before you look at any interval chart, learn these three checks. Together they tell you what’s happening inside the pot, which no schedule can.

The finger test

Push a finger straight down into the potting mix, up to your first two knuckles. If it comes out dry at that depth, the plant is ready for water. If it’s still cool or damp, leave it and check again in a day or two. Done before you water rather than on autopilot, this is the habit that catches overwatering before it starts.

One adjustment: two knuckles is the right depth for plants that like their mix to stay lightly moist. Succulents, cacti, snake plants and ZZ plants want the mix dry several inches down, deeper than a finger reaches in anything but a small pot. For those, push a wooden skewer or chopstick most of the way to the bottom and pull it out — if it comes out clean and dry, water; if soil clings to it, wait. Or skip the probing and use the weight test.

Pot weight

The finger test tells you about the top couple of inches; weight tells you about the whole pot. Right after you water a plant, lift the pot and notice how heavy it is. Then lift it again in a few days once the mix has dried out. The difference is bigger than you’d expect, and once you’ve felt both, you can judge a plant’s need in two seconds by picking it up — no soil contact required, which matters for a plant sitting somewhere awkward to reach.

Prefer a number to a memory? Put the pot on a kitchen scale once just after watering and once when the finger test says it’s ready again, and write both figures on a piece of tape under the saucer. From then on the plant is due when it has dropped back to about the dry weight, and you can tell that from the scale without probing anything.

What the leaves are saying

Leaves talk, but not all of them are saying the same thing when they droop. A pothos, philodendron, or monstera that’s gone too long without water will droop noticeably and then perk back up within an hour or two of a good soak — that’s a plant telling you it’s thirsty. A calathea or peace lily is a trickier read: those droop from being too dry and from sitting in mix that’s too wet, so a droopy calathea is a signal to go check the soil with your finger, not a signal to reach for the watering can.

What to do when a plant is due

Watering well matters as much as watering on time. Take the plant to a sink, or water it in its saucer, and pour slowly until water runs out of the drainage hole. That wets the whole root ball rather than just the top inch, and it carries away some of the mineral salts that build up from tap water and fertilizer. Then let it drain and tip out the saucer, within half an hour or so, rather than leaving the pot standing in its own runoff — that’s the fixed-schedule mistake arriving by another route.

Two things commonly go wrong here. If water runs straight through in seconds and the pot still feels light, the mix has dried hard and is shedding water instead of absorbing it; stand the pot in a few inches of water for fifteen to thirty minutes and let it drink from the bottom. And if the pot has no drainage hole, none of the above works reliably — keep the plant in a plastic nursery pot that does have one, and set that inside the decorative pot, lifting it out to water over the sink.

How often to water: starting intervals by plant type

Once you know the three tests, a table stops being a guess and becomes a starting point — a first interval to try, which you then confirm or correct with your finger. These are broad bands for common houseplant categories, not a promise for your particular plant in your particular room.

A few succulents sit outside even this. Living stones and similar desert specialists go months without water in winter, so if you own something unusual, look it up rather than reading it off a row.

Then correct the row, which takes a few watering cycles. Say the table sends you to seven days for a pothos. Check with your finger on day five: if the mix is already dry, water it and check a day earlier next time, and keep stepping back until a check finally comes up damp — the last day that came up dry is your interval. If it’s still damp on day seven, wait and check again on day nine, and if that’s when it’s dry, write down nine. Two or three rounds and the number stops moving. The table has then done its job and you can stop consulting it.

If your plant isn’t in the table at all, start from its leaves. Thin, soft leaves usually mean a plant that dries out fast and wants water often — start around five days in summer and ten in winter. Thick, waxy or fleshy leaves store their own water and want it rarely — start around fourteen days in summer and twenty-eight in winter, unless it’s one of the desert specialists above, which you should look up rather than guess at. Then run the same correction loop, which gets you to the right number regardless of what the plant turns out to be called.

Notice the spread even in a table this broad: a fern can need watering several times over in the stretch between two waterings of a snake plant. That is why the question only works asked plant by plant.

Why the interval changes between summer and winter

The mechanism is straightforward once you see it. Shorter winter days mean the plant gets less light, less light means slower growth, and slower growth means the roots are drawing a fraction of the water they drew in July. Indoor heating pushes the other way — it dries the air, and the surface of the mix with it — and how the two balance out depends on your room, but in most homes the drop in root uptake is the effect that wins, so the pot as a whole stays wet longer. The same pot that dried out in four days in July can hold water for a week or more in January, with nothing else about your routine changing.

Switch when the plant tells you rather than on a date. The cue is growth: when new leaves stop appearing and the plant is holding steady instead of pushing, move to the longer interval, and move back when it starts growing again. Northern-hemisphere rooms usually land somewhere around October and March. If a fixed prompt suits you better, the clocks changing works as well as anything.

Keep watering on the summer interval into a season when the plant needs much less, and a plant that thrived all summer can start to look unhappy by late winter.

The five things that move your number

Even within one plant type, in one season, your interval won’t match your neighbor’s. Five things move it, and it’s worth knowing which way each one pushes:

  • Light. More light drives more growth and faster water use. Moving a plant from a dim corner to a bright windowsill can shorten its interval by several days.
  • Pot material. Unglazed terracotta is porous and lets moisture evaporate through the walls, so it dries faster than a sealed glazed ceramic or plastic pot holding the same plant.
  • Pot size relative to the plant. A small plant in a large pot has far more mix than its roots can use, so it stays wet much longer than the same plant snug in a pot barely bigger than its root ball. This one can stretch an interval well past anything a table would predict.
  • Your home’s humidity and heating. A dry, heavily heated room pulls moisture out of leaves and the surface of the mix faster than a humid bathroom or kitchen does.
  • The potting mix. A chunky, bark-heavy mix built for aroids or orchids drains and dries fast; a dense, peat-heavy mix holds water far longer in the same pot.

Any one of these can shift your real interval by a week or more, and two of them stacking — a small plant in a big glazed pot in a dim corner — can double it.

How to write it down so you stop guessing

The whole method comes together in one small record. For each plant you need six things: the plant, the room it lives in, its summer interval, its winter interval, the date you last watered it, and the date it’s next due. Only the last one is calculated, and it’s worth being clear about what it’s for: a due date is a prompt to go and run the finger test, not an instruction to pour. The record replaces your memory, not your judgment.
